How to Play Videos with Spatial Audio on macOS

Spatial Audio can make a movie feel much larger than the screen in front of you. Dialogue stays anchored near the display, while music and sound effects can appear beside, behind, or above you. macOS already has the playback system for this—the main challenge is choosing a player that can open your video and hand its audio to Apple correctly.

Quick Setup: What You Need

For the full Spatial Audio experience with head tracking, start with:

  • A Mac with Apple silicon running macOS 12.3 or later.
  • Compatible headphones, such as AirPods 3 or later, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.
  • A video with a multichannel or Dolby Atmos audio track. A 5.1, 7.1, or Dolby Atmos track gives macOS real directional information to work with.
  • QuickTime Player, IINA 1.4 or later, or VidHub.

Some Mac models can also reproduce Spatial Audio through their built-in speakers. Check the audio section of your Mac's technical specifications for “Spatial Audio” or “Dolby Atmos” support. Head tracking, however, requires compatible headphones and an Apple silicon Mac.

The shortest path is:

  1. Connect your AirPods and select them as the Mac's sound output.
  2. Try the video in QuickTime Player first.
  3. If QuickTime cannot open the file or play its audio, use IINA or VidHub and enable Spatial Audio support in the app's settings.
  4. Fully quit and reopen IINA or VidHub after changing the setting.
  5. Start the video, open Control Center, click Sound or the AirPods icon, and choose Fixed or Head Tracked under Spatial Audio.

What Is Spatial Audio?

Stereo audio has a left channel and a right channel. Surround sound adds more channels, commonly 5.1 or 7.1, so a movie can place dialogue, ambience, and effects at different positions around the listener. Dolby Atmos goes further by treating some sounds as objects that can be positioned in a three-dimensional space, including above you.

Spatial Audio is Apple's playback technology for rendering that surround or Atmos mix through supported speakers or headphones. With compatible AirPods, macOS can also use dynamic head tracking. In Head Tracked mode, the screen acts like the fixed position of the cinema: turn your head and the soundstage remains anchored to the Mac. Fixed mode keeps the immersive surround effect but disables head tracking.

Spatial Audio does not create a true Atmos mix from nothing. macOS may offer Spatialize Stereo for ordinary two-channel content, but that is an upmixed effect rather than the original multichannel or Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Option 1: QuickTime Player

QuickTime Player supports Spatial Audio through Apple's media frameworks by default. There is no hidden switch to enable. If the video and its audio track are supported, open the file, start playback, and select Fixed or Head Tracked from the Mac's Sound menu.

This is the cleanest option because it is built into macOS and uses the system playback stack directly.

The limitation is media compatibility. QuickTime works best with Apple-friendly combinations such as MOV or MP4 containers using H.264, HEVC, or ProRes video and AAC, Dolby Digital, or Dolby Digital Plus audio. A file may fail even when its extension looks familiar because the container, video codec, and audio codec are separate things.

For example, QuickTime may not open an MKV file, and a movie with DTS, DTS-HD MA, or Dolby TrueHD audio may open without usable sound. Apple also notes that older or specialised formats can require a different media player.

If QuickTime plays the video correctly, keep using it. If it rejects the file, do not transcode the entire movie just to get Spatial Audio—try IINA or VidHub first.

Option 2: IINA 1.4 or Later

IINA is a free and open-source macOS video player built around mpv and FFmpeg, so it supports far more containers and codecs than QuickTime Player. Starting with IINA 1.4, it can send audio through AVFoundation, which enables macOS Spatial Audio.

To turn it on:

  1. Update to IINA 1.4 or later.
  2. Open IINA > Settings > Video & Audio.
  3. Find Audio Driver and select AVFoundation instead of Core Audio.
  4. Quit IINA completely with Command-Q, then reopen it.
  5. Play the video, open the Mac's Sound menu, and choose Fixed or Head Tracked.

IINA's 1.4 release notes describe AVFoundation as experimental and warn that it can introduce delays in some situations. Recent IINA builds are designed to switch audio drivers dynamically, but restarting the app is still a reliable way to ensure macOS creates a fresh Spatial Audio session.

If you notice delayed audio, unusual seeking behaviour, or another regression, switch the audio driver back to Core Audio for videos where Spatial Audio is not important.

Option 3: VidHub

VidHub is another good choice when you want broad format support together with a media library and network sources such as SMB, WebDAV, Emby, Jellyfin, or Plex.

To enable Spatial Audio in VidHub:

  1. Open VidHub > Settings > Playback.
  2. Turn on Spatial Audio.
  3. Fully quit VidHub, then reopen it.
  4. Start playing the video.
  5. Open the Mac's Sound menu and choose Fixed or Head Tracked.

VidHub's own Spatial Audio instructions note that the video must be actively playing before the system option becomes available. As with IINA, restarting the app after changing the setting prevents an old audio session from keeping the previous output mode.

Which Player Should You Use?

My recommendation is simple: use QuickTime when it works, IINA when you want a powerful general-purpose local player, and VidHub when you also want a managed media library or network playback.

How to Confirm Spatial Audio Is Working

Keep the video playing while you check the setting:

  1. Click Control Center in the macOS menu bar.
  2. Open Sound, or click the AirPods icon if it is visible.
  3. Look for Spatial Audio.
  4. Select Fixed or Head Tracked.

If Head Tracked is working, turn your head slowly while facing the Mac. Dialogue should remain anchored near the screen instead of moving with your headphones.

If the Spatial Audio control is missing or unavailable, check the following:

  • The AirPods are connected and selected as the current output device.
  • The video is actively playing when you open Control Center.
  • The Mac, macOS version, and headphones support Spatial Audio.
  • The selected audio track is multichannel or Dolby Atmos, rather than mono.
  • IINA is using AVFoundation, or VidHub's Spatial Audio setting is enabled.
  • You fully quit and reopened the player after changing its audio setting.

Final Thoughts

macOS already provides excellent Spatial Audio rendering, but the player determines whether the system receives the right audio information. QuickTime Player offers the most seamless experience and needs no configuration, but its format support is limited. IINA 1.4 and later solves that problem for most local files through its AVFoundation audio driver, while VidHub combines Spatial Audio with wider library and network playback features.

Once the correct player, output device, and soundtrack are in place, local movies on a Mac can deliver a surprisingly convincing cinema-like soundstage—especially with dynamic head tracking enabled.
