Dolby Vision Playback on macOS

Sat Apr 15 2023

In short, I use Movist Pro, you can also use Infuse Pro if you have already bought it.

Dolby Vision is commonly considered the best HDR format at the time of writing this blog, but it is not well-supported by common media players. I have not found any free or open-source media player that supports Dolby Vision playback on macOS, including IINA, VLC, and MPV. As a result, I turned to paid options.

I tried the highly praised Infuse Pro, and it did work with Dolby Vision, but it had issues with other HDR formats. At the time I was using it, it could not compete with IINA on HDR tone mapping. The colors were not saturated enough, and it had flicker issues. The lifetime purchase for all Apple devices costs 92 USD, but I only needed it for macOS, and I did not need its media library at all, so I decided to give up on it.

Then, I tried Movist Pro. Dolby Vision is working, and many HDR formats are supported, including HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. The performance on playing 4K 60FPS HDR is gradually better than IINA. The one-time purchase price of 7.99 USD is much cheaper. That's just enough for me.
