Taking screenshots and marking them to explain situations on your screen are quite essential and common skills in online chat.

macOS and Windows have their own built-in screenshot tools, but none of them are better than the screenshot tool built into IMs like WeChat. There is no doubt that chat software understands users' communication requirements better.

I used to use QQ a lot, but times have changed; WeChat has now superseded it. However, the QR Code login sequence for WeChat Desktop is inconvenient and frustrating, which makes me reluctant to use WeChat on the desktop. So, I sought a standalone third-party screenshot tool so that I wouldn't have to rely on WeChat to take screenshots anymore.

And not after a long hunt, I found:

- [Xnip](https://xnipapp.com/) for macOS;
- [Snipaste](https://www.snipaste.com/) for Windows, also available for macOS;

I believe both of these two tools are inspired by the legendary QQ screenshot tool:

1. Press the hotkey, then draw a rectangle on your screen to create a screenshot;
2. Can take a screenshot of a single window by selecting one;
3. Provides good annotation tools for users to make marks;
4. Double-click to add the screenshot to the clipboard, which is far more convenient than those OS built-in ones;

It makes me feel safe to stay away from WeChat.
